Think fresh, quality food and Tennessee probably doesn’t come to mind. But perhaps, as consumers, we should reconsider. “Buy local” has a different ring to it these days. The Department of Agriculture’s “Pick Tennessee Products” campaign works to connect buyers and sellers – you, as a consumer, and local farmers. For those of us who want to experience exceptional taste, buying locally means buying fresh, seasonal food.

I recently moved back to my East Tennessee roots after spending nearly three years in Oregon, a state of great cuisine. And the perfect training ground for developing a Personal Chef business! Oregon growers exhibit reverence for the soil and the wholesome quality of food it provides. Farmers markets are a happening in the Northwest. Organic production drives sales. Community Supported Agriculture flourishes.

People like knowing where their food comes from, protecting the environment, supporting endangered farms and strengthening the local economy by keeping their food dollars at home. As a native Knoxvillian, I believe East Tennesseans will also choose safe, wholesome, local food when given the opportunity. Evolution is slow, but within the next few years, I look for both area consumers and chefs to become much more connected to locally produced food.

As a chef, I take pride in the intricate aromas, textures, and flavors created with a surprising abundance of local vegetables and berries from fields, fruit and nuts from orchards, wild mushrooms and ramps from forests, fish from rivers and farms, and a handful of small wineries committed to producing memorable wines.
